Implementation of Various Types of Green Technology for Sustainable Life

Green technology utilizes environmental science and technology to conserve the natural environment and minimize the adverse impacts of human activity. This concept was born out of the urgency to direct the earth’s environmental and ecological stability.

Moreover, green technology, which is also related to sustainable technology, presents itself in diverse forms and concepts. These, among others, include energy conservation, water treatment, environmental remediation, air pollution control, and sewage treatment.

Below, we can see the implementation of several derivatives of the said concept:

  • Energy conservation: utilizing equipment that requires a lesser amount of energy. Energy conservation and efficiency are approaches related to choosing the suitable equipment that will yield a low consumption of electricity.
  • Water treatment; essential in the process of making water more suitable for the end-user. Its main objective is to eliminate pollutants in the water and reduce the adverse impact of the water returning to the environment after use. The basic physical and chemical processes for water treatment include settling, filtration, disinfection, and coagulation.
  • Environmental remediation; this variety of green technology deals with the removal of pollutants from natural resources such as groundwater, water reserves on the earth’s surface, and soil; for the protection of both the environment and human health.
  • Air pollution control; Pollutants such as asbestos, dust, soot, ash, carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, chlorofluorocarbons  (CFC), and lead compounds, among others, are the major contributors to air pollution. Air pollution control aims to minimize the level of the adverse impact of such pollutants. The methods and technologies employed for control include Combustion, Absorption, Adsorption, Mechanical Devices, Fabric Filters, Wet Scrubbers, and Electrostatic Precipitators.
  • Sewage treatment; similar to the concept of water treatment, this specific method purifies water according to its pollution level by removing pollutants from wastewater, and household sewage, among others. The difference between water treatment and sewage treatment is in their purpose. The aim of the latter is to furnish safe fluid waste streams and solid waste for disposal or reuse while the former intends to address water safety per se. With the recent technological developments, the reuse of sewage water for drinking has been made possible.

In summary, it is suffice to say that every variation of green technology needs ample research and development. The challenge to implement green technology mostly rests on the availability of adequate funding needed to convey such concepts and methods in real life. With a promise of a better future, this challenge is invariably worth surmounting to realize a better environment ahead of us.
